YEREVAN, - 2011 was memorable for Armenia as the 20th anniversary of Armenia’s independence was celebrated with a military parade, the deputy speaker of Armenian parliament and press secretary of the governing Republican People’s Party Eduard Sharmazanov told Armenian News-NEWS.am.
“Our army showed its true power and the whole world witnessed that and it is not by chance that many international experts point that out. If it is necessary Armenia will not only defend its borders but also Nagorno Karabakh’s security whose guarantor for security Armenia is,” Sharmazanov said.
Sharmazanov also talked about lost opportunities of last year.
“President Serzh Sargsyan invited the two former presidents to participate in the military parade but for unknown reasons only the current president participated in it. He again showed that all his steps are not directed to solving his problems and the problems of his team but they are directed towards unity and statehood,” he added.
According to the deputy speaker the current Armenian government is a trustworthy partner of the international community, and it is not by chance that foreign partners mention that the president is the leader of democracy. The dialogue between the government and oppositional Armenian National Congress (ANC) and also the dialogues between the ruling coalition and the opposition forces in the parliament show that fact, Sharmazanov stressed.
“It must be pointed out that the sides presented themselves correctly and an ideological dialogue took place. But the negative side of this is that for ANC its own strategic priorities were more important and ANC put away the interests of the country and stopped the negotiations. But the positive side is that the government showed political will and tolerance and the opposition organized its meetings correctly and democratic. That is why I hope that 2012 as an electoral year will go on in the same way. That means there will not be a nihilistic fight, a fight to eliminate individuals, but there will be an ideological fight, which is the main component of democracy,” Sharmazanov mentioned.
