YEREVAN. – The initiative to change to a 100-percent proportional election system is premature, Armenia’s Deputy National Assembly (NA) Speaker, and the ruling coalition’s Prosperous Armenia Party (PAP) member, Samvel Balasanyan stated during the NA hearings devoted to passing to a completely proportional election system in the country.

Balasanyan criticized the proportional election system, and he noted that in this case the voter-MP relation will be lost. The Deputy Speaker from Gyumri city, who likewise was elected through the majority system, believes that in the case of 100-percent proportional elections, primarily capital Yerevan residents will become MPs.

To note, the NA hearings are being held upon the motion of parliamentary opposition ARF Dashnaktsutyun and Heritage parties, and PAP.
