In her written reply to the letter of protest presented by the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) U.S. State Secretary Hillary Clinton refrained from calling the Armenian Genocide ‘the business of historians’, however, at the same time she did not condemn it as a crime. Moreover, she did not officially acknowledge the genocide as she and President Obama had promised to do, Asbarez reports.

ANCA wrote to Hillary Clinton after her announcement on January 26, 2012, that she considers the genocide to be the business of historical debates.

ANCA wrote a 6 page letter including 10 direct questions to the State Secretary on February 9.

In her response on March 1, Clinton reminded that in 2011 President Obama had mentioned the 1.5 victims who had died or were killed as a result of the worst atrocities of the 20th century in the Ottoman Empire. She also reminded about her visit to the Genocide Memorial in Tsitsernakaberd, Yerevan, as a sign of respect towards those ‘who lost their lives during the tragedy’. She also had mentioned that Turkey and Armenia must solve their historical conflicts by themselves.

When Congressman Adam Schiff, one of the main proponents of the Armenian Genocide Resolution (№ 304) asked Clinton whether Clinton, as US State Secretary thought the same way about the Genocide as she did when being senator, Clinton was just as evasive.

In her answer Clinton resorted to phrases like ‘horrific events’ and ‘one of the most terrible atrocities of the 20th century’ whereas in 2008 while still a senator, she had confirmed that ‘the terrible events against the Armenians in the Ottoman Empire were the brightest example of Genocide.”
