YEREVAN. – The level of Armenia’s participation in the European Union (EU) Eastern Partnership Summit, which will get underway in one day in the Lithuanian capital city Vilnius, and the content of the document to be signed with the EU are yet unclear, Haykakan Zhamanak (HZ) reports.

“An anonymous diplomatic source told HZ that the draft document, which Armenia submitted to the EU, is not approved by some EU member states.

“The negotiations are continuing around some formulations in the document, and whether or not [Armenian President] Serzh Sargsyan will head for Vilnius depends on their [i.e., the negotiations] results.

“According to the diplomatic source, the Armenian party does not plan on changing the formulations in question. It is believed they relate to either the interests of the Customs Union or the NK [i.e., Nagorno-Karabakh] issue,” Haykakan Zhamanak writes.

To note, following the talks that were held on September 3 in Moscow between Armenian and Russian Presidents Serzh Sargsyan and Vladimir Putin, Sargsyan had announced that Armenia plans to join the Customs Union and subsequently engage in the formation of the Eurasian Economic Union. Aside from Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan likewise are members in the Customs Union. And in response to this development, the European Union had stated that the signing of the Armenia-EU Association Agreement and the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area agreement is now doubtful.
