YEREVAN. – Haykakan Zhamanak daily posed several questions to Hovhannes Khoyetsyan, Head of Media Division at Spitak Municipality of Armenia, in connection with the city square which is named after Viktor Yanukovych, the daily reports. Below is an excerpt from the interview.

Why was a square created in Yanukovych’s name?

Following the Spitak earthquake [in 1988], Yanukovych greatly helped our city. He is also an honorary citizen of Spitak.

[But] Yanukovych Square was named in 2006. Why didn’t you remember Yanukovych before that?

Yanukovych was prime minister in 2006. It [i.e., the naming of the square] was carried out at the people’s proposal and upon the council of elders’ decision.

Can you rename the square?

I can’t say; [but] hardly. At any rate, there are no such sentiments among the people. Perhaps this matter will be resolved at high levels.
