YEREVAN. – Judging by the logic of Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan’s diplomatic appointments, we can assume that he appoints someone as ambassador so as not to offend, and sometimes even to do a favor for his close circles, Zhoghovurd daily reported.

“It officially became known yesterday [Tuesday] that preceding Sport and Youth Affairs Minister [and Olympic champion in weightlifting] Yuri Vardanyan is appointed Armenia’s Ambassador to Georgia.

“This appointment is noteworthy because while working as the sports minister, Vardanyan disgraced himself, to put it mildly, in his professional domain, and, now, the person who appointed him ambassador must be asked: ‘Why are you appointing the legendary athlete as Armenia’s ambassador to Georgia?’

“Georgia is not a country of tertiary importance to Armenia. It is our [Armenia’s] sole Christian neighbor from where passes the only land road linking [Armenia] to the RF [Russian Federation] and the Eurasian Economic Union member countries [Russia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan].

“And if the legendary athlete shows his ambitions in Georgia just as during the time when he was a minister [in Armenia], the ‘legendary’ failures for our country will be assured,” Zhoghovurd wrote.
