YEREVAN. – Commenting on the Kazakhstan FM’s statement that Armenia’s Eurasian Economic Union (EaEU) accession agreement may be signed in October, Haykakan Zhamanak daily specifically wrote:

“The statement only means that obstacles are encountered on the road to Armenia’s EaEU accession.

“In all probability, these obstacles are linked to Azerbaijan. Russia is attempting to include this country likewise into EaEU, and Azerbaijan clearly says that it will be interested in it only if Russia resolves the Karabakh issue in its favor, or at least ensures that the liberated territories are returned to Azerbaijan.

“It was given this prospect that [Armenian President] Serzh Sargsyan is trying to become an EaEU founding member, or at least enter this organization before Azerbaijan. This enables to veto Azerbaijan’s potential accession, if it were linked to the Karabakh issue.

“And considering this very fact, Russia defers Armenia’s EaEU accession.”
