Europe’s first commercial robotaxi service has started in Croatia, with customers able to book rides for a fraction of the cost of a regular taxi, Bloomberg reports.

Local startup Verne operates a fleet of 10 electric vehicles in Zagreb, the country’s capital. The cars—Arcfox Alpha T5 models by Chinese manufacturer BAIC Motor Corp.—are equipped with autonomous-driving software from China’s Pony AI Inc.

A ride within a service area of about 57 square kilometers will cost only €1.99. The robotaxi’s service area includes Croatia’s main international airport.

The ride can be booked through the Verne app.

According to local regulations, there is currently a security operator in the car, but the ride is fully autonomous.

The Verne project is also supported by Croatian entrepreneur Mate Rimac, who is engaged in the production of electric hypercars. He also oversees the Bugatti brand.

According to Marko Pejkovic, CEO of Robotaxi, about 300 people currently have access to the service, and another four thousand are on the waiting list.
