In the Austrian city of Braunau am Inn, a police station has opened in the house where Adolf Hitler was born. The official opening ceremony, attended among others by Austrian Interior Minister Gerhard Karner, took place on July 22, Reuters reports.

Austrian authorities had been engaged in a years-long legal dispute with the owner of the house, which ended with the building being expropriated in 2016. There were plans to demolish the house where Hitler was born, but those plans were ultimately abandoned, and it was decided to house a police station in the building.

In 2020, when the results of the competition for the building’s renovation were announced, it was reported that five million euros would be spent on converting it into a police station.

As Reuters notes, the only thing that now reminds people that Hitler was born in this building is a memorial stone near the house, brought from the Mauthausen concentration camp, bearing the inscription: “Never again fascism.”

Adolf Hitler was born in the house in Braunau am Inn, near Salzburg, in 1889. Over the years, the building housed a school, a library, and a shelter for people with disabilities.
