At least 164 people have been killed and hundreds injured after a 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia, The Independent reports.

Authorities expect the death toll to rise, with the highest number of casualties currently reported in the western province of Risaralda.

Newly sworn-in President Abelardo De La Espriella declared a state of emergency to expedite recovery funding as rescue efforts continue for trapped residents.
