The fallout from Anak Krakatau volcano’s eruption expanded rapidly on Sunday as Indonesian authorities shut down eight regional airports—up from an initial six—grounding air traffic across Western Java and Southern Sumatra due to drifting volcanic ash, Antara news agency reports.

The list of temporarily closed airports includes Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (Tangerang, Banten), Halim Perdanakusuma Airport (Jakarta), Radin Inten II Airport (Lampung), Husein Sastranegara Airport (Bandung, West Java), Budiarto Airport (Curug, Tangerang), Pondok Cabe Airport (South Tangerang), Taufik Kiemas Airport (Pesisir Barat, Lampung), and Atung Bungsu Airport (Pagar Alam, South Sumatra).

The Anak Krakatau volcano, which began erupting on Friday evening, has released a fountain of lava. A column of ash and smoke rose more than 15 thousand meters into the air. According to the Indonesian meteorological agency, the rumble of the eruption was heard up to 700 km away. There were no reports of casualties or injuries.

Anak Krakatau erupted in July, and at the same time local authorities raised the threat level to the third on a four-point scale.
