Porsche is preparing a new generation of its gasoline-powered Macan, which will differ—with a more aggressive design—from the electric version, Autocar reports.
The new SUV will come out in 2028 and will be sold alongside the Macan Electric.
Judging by the first prototypes, the car will have wider wheel arches, an enlarged radiator grille, and a lowered body.
This model will be built on the Premium Platform Combustion (PPC) platform, which is used by the Audi Q5. That is why the early prototype outwardly resembles the German SUV from Audi. However, the differences are already noticeable: the Porsche test car has widened wheel arches and a changed front end.
The prototype’s black color is also evidence of Porsche’s ownership: the company uses it on test cars, including the future 718 Boxster and Cayenne electric models. Blocks mounted around the wheel arches and on the floor help engineers test the road clearance in real conditions. Their placement suggests that the production Macan with an internal combustion engine will be lower and wider than the Audi Q5, which should have a positive effect on handling.
The final appearance of the novelty is still kept secret. However, new Porsche design chief Tobias Suhlmann previously emphasized that the car should retain the recognizable lines of the brand. In particular, he mentioned the characteristic convex wings, which the designers intend to adapt to the SUV. At the same time, the structural differences between electric cars and cars with an internal combustion engine require separate design solutions.
Porsche CEO Michael Leiters has called the new gasoline-powered Macan one of the company’s immediate priorities. The production of the previous version with an internal combustion engine ended in July, but in the third quarter it was still ahead of the electric modification in sales: 27,996 cars to 23,029. In total, 51,025 cars of the Macan family were sold, which is 21% less than in the same period in 2025.
As part of the strategy review, Porsche intends to focus not so much on sales amount as on the profitability of each car.
At the same time, the company is discussing the possibility of releasing a new mid-engined premium model.
In addition, Porsche is to unveil the Mission S concept today, which is expected to give an idea of the future supercar with an internal combustion engine.
