YEREVAN. – It was difficult to expect such a disregard toward one’s own country as Armenia President Serzh Sargsyan expressed on May 29 in Astana.

Opposition Heritage Party National Assembly (NA) Faction Head Ruben Hakobyan on Tuesday stated the aforementioned at the NA.

In Hakobyan’s words, it was surprising that the Armenian delegation in Astana was unprepared for Kazakhstan to basically start protecting the interests of Azerbaijan.

Opposition Armenian National Congress NA Faction Head Levon Zurabyan, for his part, noted that the ANC began having concerns about Armenia’s future when they had seen that the head of the Armenian delegation—that is, President Serzh Sargsyan—was unable to say something at a high level, and in defense of Armenia’s interests.

“It’s too bad that we have to raise such matters,” Zurabyan added.

The treaty on the establishment of the Eurasian Economic Union (EaEU) was signed, in the Kazakh capital city Astana on May 29, by the leaders of Russia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan. In addition, Armenia President Serzh Sargsyan participated in the meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council and offered to sign a treaty on Armenia’s Union accession by no later than June 15.

In response, Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev spoke about the letter by Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev calling to accept Armenia into the Eurasian Union only within the limits of the country’s internationally recognized borders, and not including Nagorno-Karabakh. But Russian President Vladimir Putin, for his part, stressed the need to sign a respective document with Armenia in the shortest period of time.
