YEREVAN. – There is no ground to have the second official  language in a mono-ethnic country,  Deputy Speaker Hermine Naghdalyan said during a press conference on Monday.

“In Armenia where 97 percent of population are ethnic Armenians, and there are no large ethnic groups speaking other languages, there are no reasons for second official language,” said Naghdalyan,  who is also co-chair of the Armenian-Russian inter-parliamentary commission.

For his part, MP Levon  Martirosyan recalled that according to the Constitution of nearly all Soviet Union republics as of 1978, Russian was one of the official languages, except for Armenian SSR and Georgian SSR.

During his recent visit to Armenia, head of the Russian state news service Dmitry Kiselyov said the role of Russian language has been reduced, calling it unacceptable. Kiselyov said this will impact Armenia's national security.

The Armenian officials said Russian language is in the focus, but there is no reason to turn it into an official language.
