YEREVAN. – Armenia’s maintaining its 78th spot in the latest World Press Freedom Index, which is issued by the international organization Reporters Without Borders, is correct, and regression is not recorded in the country in terms of free speech.

The chairman of the Armenian Committee for the Protection of Freedom of Speech (CPFS), Ashot Melikyan, told the abovementioned to Armenian News-NEWS.am.

“There is no worsening here at us; [but] there is progress in Georgia’s case,” Melikyan added. 

He also noted that there is no sense to be compared with Azerbaijan when it comes to free speech. As per the Armenian CPFS chairman, the conditions that are at work in Azerbaijan have nothing to do with democracy, and therefore Armenia needs to be compared with the countries that are higher up in the World Press Freedom Index.

As reported earlier, Armenia has maintained its position from last year and is still ranked 78th in the new annual World Press Freedom Index by the international organization Reporters Without Borders. Azerbaijan, on the other hand, has dropped two spots from last year’s report and is now 162nd, thus joining the list of 25 countries with the worst indicators.
