YEREVAN. – The calm sociopolitical and societal climate will be maintained in Armenia from now on, too, since the roots of peace are in the history of your country.

Belarusian Ambassador Igor Nazaruk told the aforesaid to Armenian News-NEWS.am, as he reflected on the recent referendum on constitutional amendments in Armenia.

“There are good results where there is the rule of law, right,” Nazaruk specifically said. “There are suffrage traditions and people’s preferences likewise in Armenia. And in accordance with them, the people expressed in favor of this or that political system. Time will tell, but I’m confident that the people are not wrong. And it is a natural phenomenon that there are displeased.”

The referendum on Armenia’s constitutional amendments was conducted on December 6.

Pursuant to these amendments, the country will make a transition from a semi-presidential to a parliamentary system of governance, and conduct completely proportional parliamentary elections.

The opponents of these amendments, however, consider them to be primarily the authorities’ attempt to hang on to power.

According to preliminary data by the Central Electoral Commission, a total of 63.35 percent of the voters said “yes” to these amendments, whereas 32.35 percent voted “no” in this plebiscite.
