Decision by the Yerevan City Hall not to permit rallies of the oppositional Armenian National Congress in Liberty Square conforms to the European Convention and European Court’s case-law, Armenian Ombudsman Armen Harutunyan told the journalists today.

According to him, the European Convention and  Case-laws of the European Court of Human Rights says the following: authorities can refuse opposition if there are certain reasons but the rally should be held near the place where meeting was initially planned to take place.

After 2008 tragic events, Armenian authorities hinder holding of oppositional rallies in Liberty Square that is a traditional pace for political actions. There are tens of refusals by the Yerevan City Hall to hold protest actions in the square. The opposition considers its rights are being violated.
