Apple undertook an extraordinary cleanup at the iOS App Store and purged thousands of apps from the system, media outlets report.

Overall, over 50,000 apps were removed from the store catalogs as dysfunctional or outdated. The cleanup has been mainly conducted in games, entertainment and lifestyle categories, where over 7 percent of the content was purged.

The cleanup has been announced by Apple earlier. The company reminded that it will start deleting applications that do not meet current standards or not working. “There are also apps on the App Store that no longer function as intended or follow current review guidelines, and others which have not been supported with compatibility updates for a long time. We are implementing an ongoing process of evaluating apps for these issues, notifying their developers, and removing problematic and abandoned apps from the App Store,” Apple announced in September.
