YEREVAN. – Some of the March 1 convicts will be released under an amnesty initiated by President Serzh Sargsyan, said Minister of Justice Hrayr Tovmasyan.

“Some people want to link amnesty only to March 1 events but it is to tackle bigger problems,” Tovmasyan told journalists during briefing in parliament.

The Minister gave no precise answer whether opposition activists Nikol Pashinyan and Sasun Mikaelyan will be released.

He did not rule out that Mikaelyan can be released under other procedure taking into account letter of Speaker Hovik Abrahayan sent to President Sargsyan.

Armenian opposition did not recognize official results of the presidential election held on February 19, 2008. Leader of the opposition Levon Ter-Petrosyan organized rallies in the Liberty Square, in the center of Yerevan, which lasted until March 1. Thousands took to the streets demanding that official election results should be canceled. Ten people, including two law enforcers, became victims of confrontation.
