Germany has fined operators of messaging app Telegram €5.125 million for failing to comply with the country's laws, Reuters reported.

The Federal Office of Justice said Telegram FZ-LLC failed to establish a legal way to report illegal content and failed to name an organization in Germany to receive official notices, which is required under German law.

German officials said they have repeatedly failed to turn over documents to Telegram in Dubai, despite support from authorities in the United Arab Emirates.

Earlier this year, Germany's federal police warned that the app was becoming a "medium for radicalization" that some were using to attack politicians, scientists and doctors for their role in fighting the coronavirus pandemic.

"The operators of messaging services and social networks bear a particular responsibility for acting against incitement to hatred and violence on their platforms," Justice Minister Marco Buschmann said in a statement.
