Under the painting "Woman in a Shawl" by Pablo Picasso, written in 1902, found a sketch of another work, about it the Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art.

Employees of the Museum have studied the picture together with colleagues from the United States with the help of hyperspectral camera. Under a layer of paint they found a sketch of a human figure with low head. At the same time the head of the woman in the picture repeats the outlines of the figure depicted in the sketch.

Presumably, the sketch was made by Picasso in the period from 1901 to 1904, when the artist often drew people in this position. As told in the Museum, the artist could reuse the canvas, as then could not afford to buy a new one.

The painting will be on display at the Aichi Prefectural Art Museum starting March 21.

This is not the first time another work has been found under an artist's painting. In February 2018, Science magazine reported that scientists found an upside-down landscape by an unknown artist under Picasso's painting Beggar Woman Squatting. The canvas originally depicted mountains. Picasso then painted over them, turning the canvas upside down and using the outline of the mountain as the outline of the woman's back.
