YEREVAN.- Hearings on Armenian Genocide bill in French Senate will be possibly postponed for 1-2 days, head of European Armenian Federation for Justice and Democracy Hilda Tchoboian told Armenian News-NEWS.am.

“Presently, January 24 is set as the day of hearings,” she said adding there are good chances that the bill will be approved.

Although there is controversy over the issue among the socialists and representatives of the ruling party, heads of both political powers reached agreements and support the bill penalizing the Armenian Genocide denial, she said.

“Certain French intellectuals, including certain historians, journalists, lawyers are opposing the bill. The reasons vary and are not conditioned by pro-Turkish stance, we are talking about the current political situation. Nevertheless, there is a small possibility that this factor will affect the final decision of the Senate,” Tchoboian added.

French National Assembly adopted bill which makes it a crime to deny the Armenian Genocide on December 22, 2011. In return Turkey recalled its envoy from France and voiced intention to impose sanctions against France.
