Italian UN peacekeepers have replaced a statue of Jesus Christ that was destroyed by Israeli soldiers in southern Lebanon, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on Thursday, according to AFP.

The sculpture of the crucified Jesus was installed in the Christian village of Deir Bla in southern Lebanon, near the border with Israel.

In her statement, Meloni thanked the Italian contingent of the UN peacekeeping force UNIFIL for “the decision to donate a new crucifix to the Lebanese village of Deir Bla.” She said the installation of the new statue was “a powerful message of hope, dialogue, and peace.”

Last week, the Israeli army said that two soldiers would receive 30 days of military detention and be removed from combat duty over the destruction of the statue. Another six soldiers who “were present at the scene and failed to take action to stop the incident or report it” were summoned for questioning.
