French FM Laurent Fabius’ statement, to the effect that his country is not planning on adopting a law which criminalizes the genocides, to some extent is a withdrawal by the representatives of France’s political elite, political scientist Alexander Markarov told Armenian News-NEWS.am.

“But this does not mean that [the people] in France are unaware that the parliament has not adopted the document on the Genocide, and this does not mean that France’s political elite is uninformed of the fact and will not fight against genocide prevention,” said Markarov.

As per the analyst, and with respect to criminalizing genocide denial, “we regretfully can say there was a regression.”

Also, Alexander Markarov noted that, after the recent meetings, we can assume that France has paid a price for restoring its positions in Turkey. And according to the political scientist, this price could refer to bilateral ties, defending French interests, and Turkey’s stance in the region.

As Armenian News-NEWS.am informed earlier, France will not have a new law criminalizing the denial of the Armenian Genocide. French FM Laurent Fabius made this understood during Thursday’s news conference held after his meeting with Turkey’s FM Ahmet Davutoglu, Nouvelles d’Arménie informs.

“It is impossible to remain on the same road. Otherwise, the result is apparent; it will be the same,” stated Fabius.

To note, however, on April 24, 2012, that is, on the Commemoration Day of the Armenian Genocide, French President François Hollande had affirmed, before the media, his readiness to examine a new text for such law.
