YEREVAN. – Armenian News-NEWS.am has learned from its sources that the Central Bank of Armenia plans to maintain next year solely fifteen of the twenty-one banks which currently operate in the country.

According to our information, the objective of the aforesaid is to enlarge the country’s banks. At present, it is discussed as to which banks will be joined; this matter will be clarified at the beginning of next year.   

As for the fact that the heads of four banks operating in Armenia had submitted resignations over the course of the past week, our source told us that the contracts of two of them had expired, whereas in the case of the other two, the Central Bank had compelled them to resign in connection with the financial exploitation during the most recent fluctuations in the foreign currency exchange rate in the country.

The dollar and euro exchange rates had reached record highs in Armenia on December 17, but they have dropped ever since the same evening.
