YEREVAN. – President of the National Assembly (NA), Galust Sahakyan, on Tuesday received Jan Zahradil, President of the Council of Alliance of European Conservatives and Reformists (AECR) group of the European Parliament.

Galust Sahakyan has stressed that the European Union (EU) has been and continues to remain one of the important partners of Armenia. The Head of the Parliament noted that the cooperation of Armenia with the EU is based, first of all, on the common system of values, and Armenia is resolute in strengthening and expanding relations with the EU. Highlighting the role of the parliaments in the development of Armenia-EU relations, Sahakyan noted that the parliamentary format is the platform that gives an opportunity to have free and frank discussion on the issues of bilateral interest.

Touching upon the works of the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly, the President of the National Assembly highlighted the format of multilateral cooperation, which gives an opportunity to discuss issues relating to the region. In this context, the head of the Armenian NA stated that Armenia shall use the opportunity of this cooperation, and not avoid it, unlike the Azerbaijani delegation.

“The decision made by Azerbaijan on termination of the membership in the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly is not surprising,” Galust Sahakyan said.

Touching upon the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, the National Assembly President noted that the peaceful settlement of this problem is a key foreign policy priority of Armenia. He once again documented that Armenia sees the resolution of this conflict solely through peaceful means and under the auspices of the OSCE Minsk Group, which is the only format for the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

MEP Zahradil, for his part, stated that the AECR will promote the intensification of Armenia-EU relations.

Reflecting on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, he stated that he supports a pacific settlement through a dialogue within the framework of the authorities of the relevant organizations.

And upon the guest’s request, NA President Galust Sahakyan spoke about the foreign policy and regional challenges of Armenia.
