Turkish newspaper Sonsoz has published an interesting article in connection with the constitutional amendments in Turkey, which provide for a shift to presidential system of governance. The article is entitled “Powers of “padishah” vested with President are taken from Armenian Constitution and authored by Armenian lawyer Krikor Odian.”

According to the article, the powers vested with the Turkish president under the bill of constitutional amendments, presented by the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), were in due time drawn up by Krikor Odian.

“By analogy with the Armenian Constitution, which took effect in 1863, he wrote various points in the Ottoman Constitution of 1876.  The powers vested with the sultan in the Ottoman Constitution have been included in the bill of constitutional amendments, presented by the Justice and Development Party,” the newspaper reads.

Currently, the Turkish parliament is holding discussions on the bill of constitutional amendments. Pursuant to that bill, Turkey will shift from the parliamentary to presidential form of governance.

In the Ottoman period, Krikor Odian was a famous political and public figure, who not only wrote the Ottoman Constitution, but also drew up a project of reforms in Western Armenia.
