India set a world record by launching 104 satellites on a single mission, overtaking the previous record of 37 satellites launched by Russia in 2014, BBC reported.

All the satellites, except three, are made in foreign countries, 96 of them are rom the United States.

The launch took place from the Sriharikota space centre in east India.

According to experts, this launch could be called historic, not only because of the number of satellites, but also because India wanted to become a major player in the multi-billion dollar space market.

An Indian cartographic satellite, believed to be capable of taking high resolution images is also on board. This year the government of India has significantly increased the budget of the space program and even reported about plans to send a mission to Venus.
