The UK will remain the only country leaving the EU, German Chancellor Angela Merkel assured, Politico reported.

“Individual member states of course have different ideas about how we shape the future, but the overall way forward is clear,” Angela Merkel said in an interview with Passauer Neue Presse.

She explained that the overall goal is to have more cooperation in military policy, border protection, in fight against Islamic terrorism and in all that will strengthen economy and guarantee jobs for their children and grandchildren.

It is expected that the UK’s formal Brexit notification that it will leave the EU will not overshadow the EU’s 60th anniversary summit in Rome this Saturday.

“We knew the letter was coming — whether it is a day earlier or later, doesn’t play a role,” Merkel said. “The member states that want to work on the future, can also celebrate together.”
