Catalonia authorities have not given an adequate response in the letter about the region’s independence, Spanish deputy prime minister Saenz de Santamaria said.

Spain gave Catalonia time until Thursday to comply with the country’s laws, AP reported.

Catalonia leader Carles Puigdemont’s letter, issued two hours before a Monday deadline, didn’t clarify whether he in fact declared Catalonia’s independence from Spain.  

Spain said they wanted just a simple “yes” or “no” answer from Puigdemont.
