French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed the U.S. decision to leave part of the American troops in Syria, Haaretz reported.

"On the U.S. decision, I can only but welcome this choice," Macron told during the news conference with his Iraqi counterpart Barham Salih. "The U.S. decision is a good thing. We will continue to operate in the region within the coalition."

In December, Trump announced the withdrawal of 2,000 US troops in Syria amid the victory over ISIS militants.

According to French diplomats, Macron personally tried to convince Trump to keep troops in Syria, warning him about the risks of premature withdrawal.

At the end of last week, the United States announced that there were about 400 U.S. troops in two Syrian areas.
