YEREVAN. – The defense minister of Armenia, Davit Tonoyan, on Monday received Christos Giakoumopoulos, Council of Europe (CoE) Director General of Human Rights and Rule of Law.

The minister presented to the CoE delegate the initiatives that are aimed at strengthening the protection of human rights in the Armenian armed forces, the Ministry of Defense informed Armenian News-NEWS.am.

And in the context of the Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) conflict, Tonoyan drew his interlocutor’s attention on the need for compliance with the norms and requirements of international humanitarian law, and he called on international organizations to pursue the exercising of the right to a fair trial for the civilian and military detainees from the conflicting parties. 

Also, Tonoyan and Giakoumopoulos discussed several other matters that are on the agenda of Armenia-CoE cooperation.
