The EU countries will be asked to share data on cybersecurity risks connected with 5G network and take steps to eliminate them by the end of the year, stated the European Commission, leaving without comment the US calls to ban using the equipment from China's Huawei Technologies in the EU for creating 5G network, Reuters reported.

The purpose consists in using the tools available in accordance with existing security regulations, as well as cross-border cooperation, to solve problems connected with the expansion of next-generation networks.

The decision was made, despite US pressure to boycott Huawei technology, due to concerns that China is using the company's equipment for spying. Huawei categorically denied the charges and filed a lawsuit against the US government.

The EU countries should assess the cybersecurity risks connected with 5G by the end of June. The EU general assessment should be ready by October 1. After that, EU countries will have to agree on risk mitigation measures by the end of the year.

Measures may include certification requirements and testing of products or suppliers that are considered to be potential threats to security.  By October 1, 2020, the EU will decide on further actions.

Large telecom operators oppose the ban on Huawei, saying that such a move could postpone the creation of a 5G network for years.

Huawei, the world's largest maker of telecommunications equipment, competes with Sweden’s Ericsson and Finnish company Nokia.
