The Sudanese Army will not extradite President Omar al-Bashir, who has been removed from power, to the International Criminal Court (ICC), AP reported

Col. Gen. Omar Zein Abedeen told reporters on Friday in the capital, Khartoum, defending the military's removal of al-Bashir from power.

He says the ouster "was not a coup" but a response to the people's demands, while handing over al-Bashir would be "an ugly mark on Sudan ... even rebels carrying weapons, we won't extradite them.”

In March 2009, the International Criminal Court in The Hague issued an arrest warrant for al-Bashir. He is accused of personally ordering the suppression of unrest in the Darfur province and the destruction of the civilian population. Five of the seven counts relate to crimes against humanity and two to war crimes.

Al-Bashir became the first acting head of state in respect of which the ICC issued an arrest warrant. As a result, the president, who was overthrown on April 11 by the army, until the last moment visited only those countries that guaranteed that they would not extradite him to court.
