You can drink and make toasts to yourself and feel good in the country, but stop ‘drinking’ and ‘making toasts’ when you represent the country abroad. This is what Vice-Chairman of the Republican Party of Armenia Armen Ashotyan wrote on his Facebook page.

“Recently, President of France Emmanuel Macron declared that it is necessary to review the existing system of international relations since democracy has become degraded and stressed that “capitalism has also been degraded and gone mad”.

Democracy has never been a primary factor in the foreign policy of the Russian Federation. What’s more, Russia has always suspected states that have tried to brand themselves as “democratic” in the international arena.

During the administration of US President Donald Trump, the country’s foreign policy became maximally pragmatic, and the former approaches with emphases on democracy are no longer overriding in the global policy of the United States. During a visit to Warsaw and in response to journalists’ questions in June, Trump said he could care less about the state of democracy in Poland.

Amid this, Nikol Pashinyan, the first person who is responsible for Armenia’s foreign policy, declared that democracy has to be Armenia’s ‘business card’ in foreign policy.

Question:

If the three co-chairing countries of the OSCE Minsk Group have such approaches in this game, how is Armenia going to achieve a maximally pro-Armenian resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and strengthen the security of the two Armenian states by “waving the flag of democracy”?

P.S.: You can drink and make toasts to yourself and feel good in the country, but stop ‘drinking’ and ‘making toasts’ when you represent the country abroad.
