The resignation of the judges of the Constitutional Court of Armenia means neither retreat nor defeat. It is simply a necessity, and they will have more dignity when they realize this instead of showing resistance. This is what ex-Prime Minister of Armenia Aram Sargsyan wrote on his Facebook page today.

The Facebook post particularly reads as follows:

“Dear judges of the Constitutional Court, after the change of the political situation, parliament and government in Armenia in 2018, taking into consideration the rightfully negative attitude that the public has had towards the Constitutional Court for decades, I believe having a new composition of the Constitutional Court is a political necessity.

The authorities tried to do everything possible and even provided you with the opportunity to resign voluntarily through proposals that the public didn’t quite understand. You still have the opportunity to leave with dignity and not force the country to make a choice. Almost all political parties in Armenia and the three political parties represented in parliament support the change of composition of the Constitutional Court and are only against the method of change.

Those who support you are the former authorities. They gave the right evaluation of the political situation and left, but urge you to stay in a ‘trench’ from which they were the first to come out. Although I understand that you are offended by the methods applied to get into your personal lives and impose a decision through the police, I believe your conscience to keep the country from turbulence will be stronger. The resignation of the judges of the Constitutional Court of Armenia means neither retreat nor defeat. It is simply a necessity, and they will have more dignity when they realize this instead of showing resistance.”
