YEREVAN. - European Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighborhood Policy Stefan Fule hailed positive the resumption of investigation into March 1 events in Yerevan, as well as Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan’s recent statement on the issue.

The EU Commissioner stressed it is very important for the Armenian society became aware of what exactly happened and who is to blame even after three years. Fule also stressed the importance of implementing the recommendations of the OSCE/ODIHR (Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights).

In this regard, the diplomat stressed that it will be difficult to create a favorable atmosphere for upcoming parliamentary elections without a thorough investigation into March 1 bloody events. “It will be difficult if this chapter of history is not closed,” he told a joint press conference with Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian in Yerevan today.

As a result of March 1 clashes between police and the opposition 10 people were killed and about 200 others injured, Armenian opposition did not recognize official results of the presidential election held on February 19, 2008. Leader of the opposition Levon Ter-Petrosyan organized rallies in the Liberty Square, in the center of Yerevan, which lasted until March 1. Thousands took to the streets demanding that official election results should be canceled. Ten people, including two law enforcers, became victims of confrontation.
