Armenian News - NEWS.am presents a daily digest of Armenia-related top news as of 24.08.2020:

• As of Monday morning, 33 COVID-19 new cases were confirmed in Armenia, and the total number of cases has reached 42,825 in the country.

The death toll has reached 854 cases.

The total number of people who have recovered so far is 36,049, and the number of people currently being treated is 5,666.

A total of 195,574 tests have been performed to date.

• Private Khachik Baghdasaryan (born in 2001), a conscript of the Armed Forces of Armenia, lost consciousness in his military unit on Friday, at around 3 pm.

He was taken to the Ministry of Defense Central Clinical Military Hospital in Yerevan, but his life could not be saved, the ministry informed.

• The spokesperson of the Ministry of Defense of Armenia Shushan Stepanyan has shared an update on the Armenian officer who got lost on August 22. 

The Azerbaijani side announced the capture of the Armenian officer. 

“On August 22 at around 7:30 p.m., for the purpose of checking a military post, officer Gurgen Alaverdyan got confused and got lost due to unfavorable climate. A search is being conducted," Stepanyan noted adding that the press release of the Ministry of Defense of Azerbaijan on sabotage is misinformation. 

• Second President Robert Kocharyan has sued Armenia—represented by the Ministry of Finance, DataLex Judicial Information System reported.

Kocharyan demands to confirm the violation of his right and to confiscate 2 million drams from Armenia in his favor as compensation for non-material damage.

The lawsuit will be considered at the Yerevan Court of General Jurisdiction.

• Armenia and Russia have signed an agreement on the air force fleet of Armenia, the latter’s embassy in Russia informed.

A new agreement was signed Sunday between the Ministry of Defense of Armenia and the United Aircraft Corporation of Russia.

According to the information, the agreement refers to the modernization of the aviation fleet of the Armenian Armed Forces.

• Yerevan police have apprehended Monday the protesters in front of the building of the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports of Armenia. 

They demand the minister Arayik Harutyunyan's resignation.

According to the protesters, they are not going to let the ministry desecrate our schools and our children, and are not going to let them remove Armenian Church History from the curriculum and make children wear face masks.

• Clashes took place Sunday between Armenians, Azerbaijanis, and Tushetians in Samtskhe-Javakheti region of Georgia; this information was confirmed to Armenian News-NEWS.am by Davit Rstakyan, the co-chair of the unregistered Virk Party.

According to him, the incident was caused by an attempt by Azerbaijanis to graze their sheep on a pasture owned by Armenians.
