The European Union has called on US President Joe Biden to help draft a set of common rules to harness the power of big tech companies like Facebook and Twitter and fight the fake nes spread, AP reported.

In her speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen urged the Biden administration to join forces against the dark sides of the digital world, which she said were partly behind the Capitol Hill storming on 6 January.

According to her, the business model of online platforms affects not only free and fair competition but also democracies, security, and the quality of information.

She called on the White House to join the EU's efforts, noting that together we could create a set of rules for the digital economy that is valid around the world and will cover data protection, privacy regulations and the security of the critical infrastructure.

We want to make it clear that Internet companies are responsible for how they distribute, promote, and remove content, she added.

Von der Leyen also highlighted the Facebook and Twitter decision to block former President Donald Trump's account - an unprecedented move that highlighted the enormous power of tech giants in regulating speech.
