The Moroccan Foreign Ministry has suspended ties with the German embassy in connection with a deep misunderstanding related to the disputed Western Sahara.

The move comes amid diplomatic tensions over Western Sahara, as the US under Donald Trump took the unusual step of recognizing Morocco's sovereignty over the territory in December.

A letter from Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, addressed to the rest of the Moroccan government, was leaked to the network, instructing to stop all contacts, interaction, and cooperation with the German embassy and embassy-related activities.

A senior Moroccan government official confirmed to the Associated Press that the letter was authentic but said it was not intended to be released to the public.

According to him, this decision is related to the recent position of Germany on the Sahara issue, especially after the US decision.

The UN has expressed concern that Trump's decision - in exchange for the normalization of Morocco's diplomatic relations with Israel - could hinder negotiation efforts over the long-standing conflict in Western Sahara. Many countries, including Germany, support a political solution mediated by the UN.
