YEREVAN. – The international community must actually prove the priority of human rights. The Human Rights Defender (Ombudsman) of Armenia, Arman Tatoyan, stated this at a press conference Friday, commenting on the reaction of the international community to the crimes being committed by Azerbaijan.

The ombudsman of Armenia noted that the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties states that the treaties signed under threat have no force. "I believe it is high time for the international community to prove that no one should be ignored," Tatoyan added.

"Unfortunately, passivity by international organizations during the [recent Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh)] war contributed to the increase in human rights violations, and now attempts are being made to counteract human rights and security. The situation in Syunik [Province of Armenia] is an example of the need to prove that human rights and democracy complement security. These categories do not contradict, but interact. International partners must show that human rights and democracy complement security," Tatoyan said.

According to him, if a crime goes unpunished, it can be repeated in a more severe way, and therefore, a harsh reaction to it by the international community is very important.
