In Mexico, thirteen police officers and investigators were killed in an ambush en route to a rural region, the Guardian writes.

Eight police officers and five investigators died in an ambush in Coatepec Harinas municipality, officials said.

Photos posted on social media showed the bloody bodies of officers scattered at the crime scene, as well as a white pickup truck speckled with bullet holes.

Police attacks have become commonplace in Mexico as the country faces drug cartels and organized crime and the homicide rate remains consistently high. At least 524 Mexican police officers were killed in 2020, according to the anti-crime non-governmental organization Causa en Común.
