As we speak, members of United National Movement political party, the largest opposition party in Georgia, are gathering at the political party’s headquarters to consider the actions that they will take following the arrest of their leader and third President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili.

The Prime Minister of Georgia on Friday announced the apprehension of Mikheil Saakashvili, who had informed that he was returning to the homeland on social networks on Friday morning. The details about the apprehension haven’t been reported. The presses say Saakashvili was apprehended in Tbilisi, Sputnik Georgia reports.

“Saakashvili did his best. I want to call on you, the public, now it’s your turn. Tomorrow you need to go to the elections and affirm your stance. We don’t have other plans. Tomorrow we will liberate the country, and on Sunday we invite everyone to celebrate our victory,” said Levan Khabeishvili, one of the political party’s leaders.

On Friday morning, Saakashvili disseminated a video message in which he stated that he was allegedly in Batumi. Members of United National Movement political party confirmed the news. The Georgian authorities declared that it was fake and that Saakashvili wasn’t in Georgia, and the Georgian Internal Affairs Ministry reported that the ex-president hadn’t officially crossed the Georgian border and hadn’t left Ukraine.

Earlier, Saakashvili had announced his intention to return to Georgia before the local self-government elections set to be held in October. Georgia declared a search against him within the scope of a few criminal cases, and the Georgian authorities declared that they would apprehend him as soon as he crossed the border.

Mikheil Saakashvili served two consecutive terms as President of Georgia. He left Georgia in November 2013 and hadn’t returned to the country until today, even though he had promised to do so. In 2015, he was deprived of Georgian citizenship and has been considered a citizen of Ukraine for over six years.
