Taiwan's state-owned refinery CPC Corp said on Sunday it received the country's first shipment of certified carbon-offsetting crude oil from SOCAR Trading, the trading arm of Azerbaijan's state oil company, Reuters reported.

An oil refiner aims to reduce its carbon footprint through voluntary carbon offsets as Taiwan aims to become carbon neutral by 2050.

About 1.05 million barrels of Azeri Light crude oil arrived in Taiwan on Sunday morning, with greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions offset by carbon credits certified under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS), the company's website said.

SOCAR Trading organized and structured the supply and disposal of carbon offsets registered by VCS, the oil refiner said, without specifying the cost of offsets.

The loans were issued less than six years ago, and most of them were from nature-based projects that also have additional Climate, Community and Biodiversity (CCB) accreditation, the CPC added.

CPC operates two refineries in Taoyuan and Daling in Taiwan with a combined refining capacity of 600,000 barrels per day.
