Sending the CSTO Secretary General to the South Caucasus region is a significant use of the capabilities of this organization. Maria Zakharova, the official representative of the Russian foreign ministry, stated about this Thursday at the weekly press briefing.

"I am confident that this question should not be addressed only to Russia for one simple reason: In the last two years, our country has made huge efforts to resolve long-term crises," Zakhrova added.

According to her, this was not done on paper or by political statements, but on the ground—by engaging Russian peacekeepers and using Moscow's economic opportunities.

The official representative of the Russian foreign ministry noted that Moscow is doing everything to ease tension in the South Caucasus.

"The topic of the aggravation of the situation in the region will be the key topic of the negotiations between the presidents of Russia and Azerbaijan on the margins of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Samarkand [in Uzbekistan]. Considerable steps are being taken to resolve the situation also through the MOD and Russia's (…) border service. The Russian military is in close contact with both sides to reach a ceasefire and return the Azerbaijani and Armenian troops to their initial positions," Zakharova said.
