Works by world-famous artists, including Cézanne, Serra and Van Gogh, were sold for a record $1.6 billion during a two-day auction at Christie's, auctioning off the masterpiece-rich collection of the late Microsoft co-founder Paul G. Allen.
All 155 works of art auctioned Wednesday and Thursday in New York City were sold, with five paintings selling for more than $100 million.
A painting by Pointillist Georges Seurat, "Les Poseuses, Ensemble (Petite version)," sold for $149.2 million.
Other auction highlights were a painting by Paul Cézanne, "Mont Sainte-Victoire," which sold for $137.8 million, and a landscape by Van Gogh, "Orchard with Cypresses," which sold for $117.2 million.
