Serbia and Azerbaijan signed documents on the new level of strategic partnership, including in the energy sector, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said during the visit of Azerbaijani leader Ilham Aliyev to Belgrade, RIA Novosti reported.

Aliyev is visiting Belgrade, where the delegations met Wednesday, after which members of the Serbian and Azerbaijani governments signed an agreement on the establishment of a Strategic Partnership Council and several other documents on cooperation.

"Our relations with Azerbaijan from today, when we signed this statement and the memorandum on strategic partnership and alliance, we raise to a new level," Vucic said at a joint press conference with Aliyev.

Vucic added that "Azerbaijan is a world power in gas production and supply. According to him, in 7-10 years, Azerbaijan will export more than 35 billion cubic meters of gas, today their annual exports are at 22 billion cubic meters, of which more than half to European countries.

"Therefore, we are working on a connecting pipeline between Serbia and Bulgaria to secure and purchase significant volumes of gas in advance from our friends in Baku," the Serbian leader noted.

He also said he had discussed with Aliyev Serbia's participation in an EU project to lay a cable under the Black Sea to supply electricity from Georgia and Azerbaijan.
