At Thursday's Cabinet session, the Armenian government made changes in the law "On the structure and activity of the government" and related laws, which envisage the establishment of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Deputy Minister of Justice Grigor Minasyan, presenting the respective draft package, noted: "The creation of the new ministry will enable ensuring both parliamentary and public oversight of the police sector, and it will also become the one carrying out and responsible for reforms in the sector. The Ministry of Internal Affairs will include three major services in it: police, rescue service, and migration and citizenship service.”

According to Minasyan, the heads of the aforesaid services will be appointed by the prime minister, and the deputy heads will be appointed and dismissed again by the PM—and on the respective recommendation by the minister of internal affairs.

PM Nikol Pashinyan, in turn, considered the adoption of this draft very important.

"The prospective meaning of this change is to have a new-standard police and a new-standard rescue service; this is our most important task that we are pursuing. In fact, we have had many discussions on this matter; significant and serious changes will take place," the premier noted.

According to him, Armenia should always strive to be among the best in all domains.

"We have to set very high benchmarks for ourselves," Pashinyan emphasized.

According to the respective regulations, the Chief of the Armenia Police will also be the Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs, as well as a member of the Security Council.
