The U.N. condemned Sunday the failure to deliver much-needed aid to war-torn regions of Syria, while warning that the total death toll from earthquakes that also devastated Turkey could at least double.

A U.N. convoy with supplies for northwest Syria arrived via Turkey, but relief agency head Martin Griffiths said the millions of people whose homes have been destroyed need much more.

According to an AFP correspondent, a UN convoy of ten trucks crossed northwest Syria through the Bab al-Hawa border crossing, carrying shelter kits including plastic sheeting, ropes, screws and nails, as well as blankets, mattresses and rugs.

Tens of thousands of rescuers continued to scour blighted neighborhoods in freezing weather, adding to the suffering of millions who now desperately need help.

But security concerns prompted some operations to be suspended, and dozens of people were arrested for looting or trying to defraud victims after Turkey's earthquake, media reports said.
