New Zealand was shaken by a powerful magnitude 6.3 earthquake, which was felt by 70,000 residents in both the northern and southern islands, the Daily Mail reports.

The tremor was centered around the capital Wellington on the northern island and struck at 7:38 p.m. New Zealand time on Wednesday about 50 kilometers northwest of Paraparaumu at a depth of 48 kilometers.

The National Emergencies Agency said there was no tsunami threat.

Another magnitude 4.0 earthquake also struck the country 20 minutes after the magnitude 6.3 tremor.

It struck 45 km southwest of Taumarunui in the central part of the northern island and was 78 km deep.

This happened the day after the country declared a state of emergency due to widespread flooding and damage from Tropical Cyclone Gabriel.
